The main reason for these different situations is time along with some errors and whether you have done a simple upgrade or clean install. The methods for downgrading Windows 10 for all such situations are explained below. Simply follow these steps to downgrade Windows 10 to Windows 7.
But before you begin the downgrading process of Windows 10 backup all of your important files and folders to external drive or cloud storage. These files could include your personal files as well as the installation media and ISO files for any crucial programs. One important thing to note is that these files must be stored on a device or place which is physically disconnected from your system. I would also recommend you to download drivers for your computer’s components such as graphics drivers, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth etc. in a separate storage.
Within One Month after Windows 10 upgrade
If you have recently upgraded to Windows 10 in your system then Microsoft gives you a feature to downgrade automatically to your previous operating system. Those who have decided to downgrade Windows 10 within one month after they upgraded it are the lucky ones in this case. But this feature is available only for one month after upgrade.
Note: If you have changed password of your computer after the upgrade then you should have your previous password of Windows 7. After downgrade to Windows 7, you will be asked for that password to access Windows 7. If the passwords are same then you need not worry.
Now check if Windows 10 has Windows.old folder in your system. This is a folder which is being created in your computer when you upgrade Windows. This folder contains all the installation media and files of previous Windows version. To downgrade Windows 10 to 7 this folder should be present in your computer. If you have somehow deleted it then you cannot downgrade Windows 10 to Windows 7.
Once you have done all these things listed above, you are ready to downgrade Windows 10 to Windows 7. To do so, just follow the following steps.
Start >> Settings >> Update and Security >> Recovery >> Go Back to Windows 7 >> Get Started
You will be prompted to provide reason for downgrading. Provide the reason and then follow the wizard. Computer will reboot and you will be asked for the password (if any) which you had in your last Windows version before Windows 10.
After one month of Windows 10 upgrade
If one month has passed or you have deleted the Windows.old folder then Windows would not provide you any option to downgrade it. In such a case, you will have to perform a Clean Install of Windows.
ISO Files and Installation Media
Before downgrading your Windows, you must get the ISO files and installation media of the version to which you want to downgrade Windows 10. You may either get the recovery discs with the Windows CD you bought or download these files from internet. After downloading it, you may either burn it to a disc or copy it to a USB drive using Microsoft’s Windows USB/DVD download tool.
Windows Product Key
One more important thing you will require is the product key of your older Windows you had bought. On a Windows 7 PC, there would be a Certificate of Authenticity sticker with a key on it. It could be present underside your laptop, on the back of monitor or CPU, under the removable battery, or even on a laptop’s power brick.
Once you have the ISO files and installation media along with product key, you are ready to go. Now, all you need to do is boot your computer with the ISO files and installation media and reinstall Windows 7. The re-installation process is same as that of installation of Windows for the first time. This will overwrite your desired Windows over the existing Windows 10.
